Core Values

We act in accordance with our values, even when it would be easier not to.

People First

The people we serve are our highest priority, and their interests come first.

No one is better or worse than anyone else. We are all at different stages in our own journey.

We care deeply about others.

We continuously seek out and listen to the input of our community in order to adapt and improve what we do.

We believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Always.

We strive to make our services accessible to everyone.

We believe in a world where differences are celebrated.

Everyone is welcome on our platform, and we make sure they feel that way.

Life is just better when it’s not always serious!

The story behind

Our Name

Our name comes from the Rubber Duck Method for debugging code. The process involves clearly and succinctly explaining the code line by line to—you guessed it—a rubber duck!

Through this process, any logical leaps or gaps in the programmer’s knowledge are identified and corrected for a more robust piece of software.

At Rubber Duck Tutors, we embrace this philosophy both directly for debugging and in our broader teaching practices.

Understanding any complex subject is only achievable with a robust understanding of the fundamental concepts that underpin it, as well as a clear understanding of how they relate to each other.

The Rubber Duck Method helps to highlight the gaps in student knowledge, so future study can be more targeted.

The story behind

Our Origins

The Motivation

Rubber Duck Tutors was started by us: two brothers called Adam and Matt Sinclair. Through nothing but cosmic coincidence,  we possessed all the attributes for privilege in modern society. This resulted in our lives being almost barrier-free, whilst others with different circumstances struggle against challenges that we would seldom even see, let alone fully understand. Equal access was not and is not equal opportunity, especially in the tech sector. This just didn't sit right with us, so we decided to do something about it.

The Challenge

We are facing unprecedented challenges as a global community. From resolving the climate crisis to safely navigating the perils of artificial intelligence, it’s clear that we will need to think differently than we have in the past and that we will need a more diverse and equitable workforce across the board - especially in tech - to make this happen. Truly accessible and equitable education is so much more than a ‘politically correct’ ideal: it is the first step towards this future. That’s why we founded Rubber Duck Tutors – to break down some of the educational barriers to build bridges in their place.

The Coalition of the Willing

From the start, it was clear that we couldn’t do it alone. We needed to build a solution based not on what we thought would solve these problems from our perspectives alone, but based on down-to-earth information from the members of the diverse and beautiful communities we aim to serve. Beginning with the two co-founders, a ‘coalition of the willing’ began to take shape as we spoke with a range of people from many different walks of life. Those who resonated with our mission came to waddle alongside us, each contributing to the shape and direction of the Rubber Duck Way.

The Solution

As a collective, we built a platform which harnesses the power of modern technology to revolutionise how educational relationships are formed and maintained within our communities, not just for today but for many years to come. We are thrilled to have you join us, dear reader. You are now part of our story.
